ABOUT THE WORKSHOP:
This workshop will teach you how to make a flap-over shoulder bag in a choice of 2 sizes, with adjustable strap, magnetic closure and internal pockets...perfect for daily use.
This workshop will teach you how to make a flap-over shoulder bag in a choice of 2 sizes, with adjustable strap, magnetic closure and internal pockets...perfect for daily use.
The straps can be made from leather or faux leather belts, attached securely with rivets. The bag maintains its shape with internal wadding using offcuts of quilting wadding or even old fleece throws!
You are welcome to make your bag from all-new fabrics but it’s also fun to use your creativity and re-use existing materials while doing your bit for the planet!

WHO IS IT SUITABLE FOR?
Anyone with basic sewing skills can attend this course. It is not suitable for those who have never used a sewing machine.

WHAT YOU WILL NEED TO BRING:
Approx. 1m x 1m of medium weight fabric for the bag. Light upholstery fabrics or curtains are ideal – linen or canvas type fabric, or even a nice blanket or woven fabric (not stretch).

Approx. 1m x 1m of lightweight fabric for the lining. Old pillowcases, bedding, or cotton blouses / shirts are ideal.
An old fleece throw or similar for the inner wadding (don’t worry if you haven’t got one).
If you’d like a leather strap, a leather (or ‘pleather’) belt is great – between ¾ inch and 1 ½ inch width). There is the option to make a fabric strap if you would prefer.
WHAT'S INCLUDED:
Rivets and magnetic clasps will be provided as part of the workshop cost.
You will also be able to take away the pattern so you can continue making your own bags for yourself, as gifts or even to sell.
You will also have access to unlimited tea and coffee. Maybe even a biscuit or two!

Outer fabric, lining fabric, leather strap and wadding. Alyson has a selection to buy if you are unable to source these yourself.

ABOUT THE TUTOR:
Alyson Thomas is a talented textile artist and recently retired English Teacher. She now runs The Blue House, a beautiful haberdashery situated on the River Tawe in the picturesque village of Ystradgynlais, in the Swansea Valley.

She has a wealth of experience in exhibiting and selling her work, teaching workshops and running textile art groups. In addition, she has been a member of several craft co-operatives, sat on the committee of the Swansea Festival of Stitch and also ran her own craft shop for five years...somehow finding the time to teach teenagers during the week!
One of Alyson's many textile passions is making bags from a range of pre-loved fabrics including clothing, curtains, vintage pillowcases and blankets and she is so excited to share her passion with you on this one day workshop. There are only 8 places available
